Second Annual Session - Building Our Resilient Food System: Cultivating Connections

Thank you for helping us build the
Food Action Plan Network!

Last week nearly 75 people attended the Santa Barbara County Food Action Plan (SBCFAP) listening session, where businesses, schools, neighborhoods, and organizations of all types shared and connected with others engaged in making a secure food system for our county.

See the full evening on our Facebook Live video.

We loved hearing stories like these:

  • Em Johnson, Blue Sky Center in Cuyama Valley: leveraged funding from SBCFAP for strategic planning, including launching a new economy-bolstering enterprise, Cuyama Cider. (18:19 in Facebook Live video).
  • Adam Green, Santa Barbara City College: part of a collaborative project between SBCC, UCSB, and Allan Hancock College that is tackling food insecurity on college campuses. (33:15 in Facebook Live video).
  • 20 additional community members: including the new fishery program Get Hooked and a mushroom growing enterprise called MushLove. (40:53 in Facebook Live video).
  • Santa Barbara County Health Department: offered several ways of supporting food system work. (54:10 in Facebook Live video).

We were thrilled to share our SBC Food Action success stories like these:

  • Sansum Diabetes Research Institute is seeing positive results from prescribing vegetables instead of pharmaceuticals.
  • Ted Chamberlin Ranch is seeing impactful improvement to soil health and agricultural resilience through compost application.
  • Santa Barbara County Food Rescue Network is flourishing and actively seeking new members as partners work to prevent food waste and feed those facing hunger in our County.
Watch short videos about these successes here.

Help us continue to build the network.

Led by the Community Environmental Council, Foodbank of Santa Barbara County and the Santa Barbara Foundation, the Santa Barbara County Food Action Plan was developed with over 1,000 hours of community volunteer input and published in 2016. Dozens of agencies and organizations are now working to implement the Food Action Plan goals. Learn more here.
